Product Description

HiMedia Salmonella Shigella Agar (SS Agar), Model M108, is a dehydrated microbiological culture medium designed for the selective isolation of Salmonella species and selected Shigella species from pathological specimens, suspected food products, water samples, and other microbiological test materials. The formulation inhibits many Gram-positive organisms while allowing differentiation between lactose fermenters and non-lactose fermenters.

The medium contains peptones as nutrient sources, lactose for differentiation, bile salts and brilliant green for selectivity, sodium thiosulphate and ferric citrate for hydrogen sulfide detection, and neutral red as the pH indicator. Typical Salmonella colonies appear colorless with black centers due to H₂S production, while lactose fermenters produce pink to red colonies.
